6 Most Essential Leadership Assets

By Richard Brody

Although the necessities and needs of performing as an effective leader is often discussed, great leadership only occurs if and when, an individual does all he can to accumulate as many important skills and abilities, and learns how to transform them to a higher degree of expertise, that in the optimum circumstances, results in true and relevant wisdom. Every individual entering into any position of leadership must be objectively introspective enough to know both his strengths as well as his weaknesses, and endeavor to use his best qualities/assets one way, and address those areas where he may be somewhat weaker. It is for that reason that, after more than three decades of involvement in all areas of leadership, from identifying, qualifying, training and developing, to quality and insightful consulting to well over a thousand individuals, that I have decided to share six of the most essential ASSETS leaders need to be best.

  1. Attitude combined with aptitude, combined with a willingness and ability to act: True and effective leadership must begin with a genuinely positive approach and mindset. Without the type of attitude that is capable of motivating both the leader as well as his stakeholders, there can be little chance to make a real difference. However, unless one takes advantage of his self-belief, and has and uses his skills to his best advantage, how can he expect to succeed? In addition, he must be proactive, and ready, willing and able to perform to the best of his ability.
  2. Knowing, and using his strengths productively and effectively: It’s okay and normal for each of us to have some areas where we excel, and others where we are considerably less adept. However, only when one knows and identifies his strengths, and uses them to the best advantage, do they serve him in his quest to lead effectively.

  3. Strives for more; takes actions that are in sync with the organization’s needs: You aren’t a leader if you settle for mediocre, or good-enough! Rather, you must be driven to excel, do and care more, and exceed expectations, while serving the needs, concerns and priorities of your stakeholders.

  4. Empathy; effort; expertise: No matter how much one might try, or care, unless he listens effectively and puts himself in someone elses’ place, his leadership will never truly serve the needs of his group in a sustainable or relevant manner. He must use all his effort productively, and learn from his experiences, so that he becomes expert in a relevant way.

  5. Timely action; tenacity; trustworthiness: A great leader never gives up! He is driven consistently to do something meaningful and worthwhile. Never procrastinate, because the ramifications of inaction are nearly always at least as severe as any well-considered action. However, perhaps the most important asset is absolute integrity!

  6. Sustainable ideas, programs and plans: How will your actions impact the sustainability of your organization?

A leader must make every attempt to constantly improve, in order to best serve his group. When they address the above ASSETS, they enhance their possibilities and potential.
